Description

This is a picture of a magician trying to impress 2 ladies or perhaps entertainers having a coffee or tea break. It could be or it could be more than that.

This painting was included in ManilART 2024 special exhibition "Plugged into Fernalia: Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" curated by Gromyko Semper and hosted by GALLERY NINE Manila.

Since the theme was AI, I was given a prompt to visualize. I tried to feed that prompt into Midjourney with instructions on how I wanted the art piece to come out. But alas, I was not satisfied with what Midjourney was churning out so I decided to do it without its help.

The prompt assigned to me was of a Utopian nature for AI art.

As usual, I tried to personify my subject. AI is represented by the Magician - his All-Seeing Hat suctions the clouds (the INTERNET) over one lady artist and a few other clouds (from other artists).

The clouds are synthesized to create new images that can be viewed by the AI artist (the blonde lady) via her black crystal ball. There is a mystical or magical aspect in the creation and thus her hair is adorned with "trophies" of black butterflies. Butterflies are a symbol of change or metamorphosis.

The rabbit with a book reinforces the idea that this artist uses words to generate a voluminous amount of AI art. Rabbits are symbols of rapid reproduction.

The lady in the back, with the only colorful butterfly in the art piece, is the true visual artist. She has an overflowing source ( the well) of ideas that feeds her cloud.

She is content though because she receives royalties (crown + cup of tea) from the use of her images.

In the distance is a lighthouse that pierces through the clouds. There should be a watch, a guardian, to see that only artists who agree on the use of their images (and are paid) are the only ones tapped by AI.
