Thank you very much Laura, Rhonda, Kathy, Odon, Carol and Bill! Of course thank you also to the buyer! I am very delighted that my works are appreciated enough that people are moved to shell out a few dollars to hang them on their walls. Some artists here at FAA make a killing in selling their art. I am just happy enough that I have a way to let other see mine and in those rare moments when there is a sale, I feel a sense of achievement that as an artist I pass. Thank you again to all.

Paul, Hello, besides your use of cheerful colors, there always seems to be a little story behind your art, --- here do I wonder if the two are a waiting for a GO. - Thank you for commenting on my girlfriends eyes.

Paul Hilario replied:

Eve, how you see it so shall it be! Yes, I do include a story, a lesson or some symbolism in my art - though of course it doesn't always show. Salamat for the comment.

I love your artwork! Tutong in my country is called 'pegao' and , when its rains on someone wedding day, old people use to say that is because the bride ate pegao' the day before her wedding. day,

Paul Hilario replied:

Thanks Judith! Thanks for the info also! I might try to paint that one of these days. That would be fun to do!

Paul, I Really like the composition and difference in tonal values on the faces..

Paul Hilario replied:

Thanks Anjali. Your profile image isn't a lot different from this painting. Except for the colors of course. Thanks for the comment and appreciation. The split face tonal value is a signature (not entirely unique) of mine. :-)

I love the dramatic and symmetrical color expression! Wonderful work, Paul! Thank you for sharing it!!

Paul Hilario replied:

Thanks Xueling for noticing the colors! This piece shows my preference of using complementray colors with high contrast which results to each individual color "popping" out. This way I am almost always certain to make very bright and bold paintings.

Artist's Description

Translation: Burnt rice #3.
This is number 3 in the Tutong painting series.
Tutong is the word for cooked rice that is slightly brown to chocolate (if burned) that sticks to the sides and bottom of a rice pot.
Growing up, I recall that my grandparents, uncles and aunts would tell me never to eat tutong because (1) it will make your skin dark and (2) it will make you lazy. This painting demystifies the belief. The color of your skin is not influenced by food. But food can make you lazy if you eat too much and become sluggish. Or maybe I'm just plain lazy :-)

About Paul Hilario

Paul Hilario

I paint visual narratives. I try to create stories with themes that range from the blissful to the brooding. Typically, my compositions are laden with common and personal symbolism. My works seem to have disconnected elements but they are in fact linked in the way that I see them. To the audience, however, they are like puzzles; open to varied personal interpretations. I don’t like to confine myself in a box. Some days I paint social commentaries. Other days I just paint my personal observations of issues that pertain to almost anything under the sun - this can be political, social, environmental, religious, cultural, and even agricultural. I try to paint realities in, out, and of life. Early in my career as a painter, I was mostly...
