Title
A Meal without Rice
Artist
Paul Hilario
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Description
Rice is so important in Asia that there are many proverbs that centers on the crop. Here is one. Without revealing the complete title you'll know that the focus of the painting is the lady in pink and that somehow rice relates to her. Why is there a patch on her eye? What else is different? She's not eating any rice! Even the aghast fishes on the two other women's plate can see that! A meal without rice is like a beautiful woman with only one eye. I thought of painting a cyclops first but then reconsidered and thought "Who would want a cyclops up on his/her wall?!". This painting is included in my exhibit in November. Posting it here since I guess nobody in FAA could come to my the exhibit in the Philippines anyway.

Thanks Mr Hilario. Now I understand better. Just ordered a copy today. I'm looking over your other works too.
Paul Hilario replied:
Hi Bill or is it Thomas? :-) Anyway, thank you very much for the purchase. If you find an image that you like and is not available for print do let me know and I can activate it for you. If in the future you'd like an original, we can discuss that too. Cheers! :-)

I love this painting. Mostly because my Filipina wife would rather not eat than have a meal without rice. How many times we have gone through this exact circumstance in resturants!!! What proverb does it express? My interests are more toward the sciences than the arts so please forgive me and help me overcome my ignorance.
Paul Hilario replied:
Hi Thomas! Thank you for your appreciation of this piece and your message. Of course, I can relate to your wife :-). This is a Chinese proverb that states that "A meal without rice is like a beautiful woman with only one eye". By the way, I work with an organization on rice research so science is also an interest of mine. I just like to visualize a lot :-) There are many more rice proverb or belief paintings in my page. Enjoy :-)

This is such an awesome painting, Paul! And you're right, you know, the composition is quite similar with the one of my "Soirée Parisienne" painting. :) I love that quasi-symmetry you create here and the great concept as well! f&v for sure

Love your style!! :^} jrr
Paul Hilario replied:
Thanks jrr! This is one of my first paintings in this style. If you notice in my newer paintings there are some changes and my art is evolving although the original concepts are still there. Take a look at Salat nguni't Sapat - my newest painting - and compare it to this one. Thanks again.

Great painting Paul, wonderful story. Being a Cajun is much the same a meal is not complete without our rice~Karen.
Paul Hilario replied:
Thanks Corine. Thanks also for the info. I didn't know that rice is important to Cajuns as well. Do you recall any Cajun proverbs, sayings or customs that are rice related?
